  1. To carry out an in-depth investigation into some little-known aspects, in particular the vertical ascent of elaterid larvae towards tubers. This phenomenon depends mainly on soil temperature and moisture and is therefore in close correlation with different irrigation practices and the resulting irrigation volumes as well as with natural rainfall, which has changed a great deal in recent years. This knowledge will make it possible to better position the timing of the application of the few defence products available towards the larvae on the surface, optimising their use and avoiding unnecessary interventions when the larvae are unreachable in the depths of the soil (az. 3.1)
  2. To test some agronomic strategies that limit damage to the potato crop caused by elaterids, whose proliferation is favoured by climate change, while at the same time reducing the input of the various technical means in order to safeguard water (action 3.2)
  3. Evaluate the efficacy of different elaterid control strategies by comparing innovative defence techniques, both direct, based on the use of low-impact commercial products (bioinsecticides, natural extracts and real insecticides), and indirect, through the practice of green manure with essences with biofumigant activity (az. 3.3)
  4. Collect precise indications on the most innovative elaterid control strategies (in the farms where the az. 3.3 defence trials will be held) comparing them with the conventional strategy, in order to assess the reduction of the risk for the operator’s health and the reduction of potentially harmful substances for the consumer. (az. 3.4)
  5. Evaluate the direct damage caused by elateridae and the damage caused to the entire supply chain by collecting and analysing economic data on losses in the field phase detected at harvesting in addition to those detected during storage in the warehouse. The amount of losses calculated or estimated serves to determine the validity of the investments to be made and to investigate certain socio-economic aspects that are rarely considered. (az. 3.5)
